Who implements the projects that you raise funds for?
Friends of imagine1day, Inc. (the website you are currently on) carries out its charitable purpose by issuing grants to Imagine 1 Day International Organization, a Canadian registered charity legally registered to operate as direct implementers of education programming in Ethiopia. Friends of imagine1day, Inc. has an independent Board of Directors that exercises complete discretion and control over all grants made to Imagine 1 Day International Organization. Only projects approved by the Board of Directors of Friends of imagine1day, Inc. will receive funding. Although our Canadian and Ethiopian teams are legally distinct entities to ours, we maintain a close friendship and travel together to Ethiopia regularly to oversee the progress of the projects that we fund.

What is imagine1day's experience and capacity in Ethiopia?
Since 2007, Imagine 1 Day International Organization has been exclusively focused on implementing projects that contribute to Ethiopia’s commitment to universal primary education. Their current program scope impacts 226 primary schools in two regions and five districts.
Working under Ethiopia’s public education system, and in partnership with the federal, regional and district government education offices in the country, Imagine 1 Day International Organization has demonstrated an ability to reach out-of-school children and implement education activities, which have significantly improved enrolment, retention and succession rates, as well as quality and equality in primary education. Imagine 1 Day International Organization has been recognized and awarded on several occasions by its government partners in Ethiopia for its thought leadership and implementation effectiveness.
Through their work since 2007, they have developed an invaluable understanding of the workings of the education sector, as well as local community influencers and all cross sector offices, that impact the success of holistic education projects. Their focus on developing people by giving them the tools to be great leaders has resulted in strong relationships at a federal ministry level, and within the regional education bureau and district education offices with whom they work. They've learned what it takes to help create a mindset of legacy among key stakeholders, and a commitment to education being not only a value but also a cultural necessity.
In Ethiopia, Imagine 1 Day International's head office is located in Addis Ababa, and they have four field offices located in Tigray and Oromia, which are within 100 km of all of their current project sites. They currently have 19 full time employees in Ethiopia.
What does it mean to be a direct implementer?
It means we have a team on the ground in Ethiopia (through our friends at Imagine 1 Day International Organization) who directly implement all of our project activities, and then monitor the progress and impact of each dollar we invest. We don't provide funding to other organizations, rather we work hand in hand with our partners in government and in communities to get to the root of issues and implement sustainable solutions.
Do you accept funding proposals from other groups or organizations?

The United Nations declared education as a human right (UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948). Education is a fundamental need for all to ensure an educated, healthy and vibrant population, which is a key factor leading to a country's economic growth and stability. Education ensures an informed population that is capable of bringing about economic growth, peace, democracy and good governance. As instability leading to state failure is a concern for all, it is argued that a poorly educated segment of society is a risk shared by the whole world. An educated population is less likely to suffer from preventable diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and dysentery. Attendance at school also allows for screening of treatable illness (eye exams); improved diet through school meals; and increased opportunities in life through learning basic fundamentals such as arithmetic and reading/writing. This is especially true for woman where education in turn, leads to decreases in childhood marriage, fertility rates and infant mortality rates. Lack of education is also directly linked to increased poverty. Educated populations are less likely to suffer from extreme poverty, not only because they have greater access to job opportunities, but also because education better prepares them for success in their local environment. This is true for the majority of children living in developing countries, where 80% of the population lives in rural areas and are involved in agricultural activities. In these regions, school curriculum is tailored to meet the local needs; passing on knowledge about best farming practices and protection from climate change. Education also plays a role in conserving the environment where children can learn of the environmental consequences of harmful practices and best practices to ensure sustainability.
What is a millenium development goal?
In September 2000, the largest gathering ever of world leaders (147), took place at the United Nations, Millennium Assembly in New York to discuss the world's most pressing needs. At the assembly, representatives expressed a desire to end world issues such as hunger, disease and environmental degradation. One key output of the assembly was the Millennium Declaration, giving rise to the eight quantifiable and time bound Millennium Development Goals (MDG's). One of these goals was universal access to primary education stated as: By 2015, ensure all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling. Ethiopia was one of the countries to adopt this goal, and since this time has been investing significantly in its eduation sector. A national Education Sector Development Plan aimed at achieving the UN MDG of universal primary education, has been developed and is in its fourth phase (ESDP IV). The efforts made to expand primary education has significantly improved access to primary education which is measured in Gross Enrollment Rate (GER), Net Enrollment Rate (NER) and Home to School Distance (HSD). However, despite encouraging progress in expanding access to educational opportunities, and improving the quality, relevance, equity and efficiency of the education system, the expansion of primary education has resulted in compromised quality issues in primary schools.
